We admit that the words “island town” don’t immediately make you think of ski slopes and cross-country skiing trails. But in fact this is the case with Lindau – winter sports fans will find they are closer than they expect to winter fun.
The Pfänder, the Austrian mountain that is almost Lindau’s local peak, is just a few minutes away by train or car. A cable car whisks you from the lakeshore up to the summit at 1,064 metres, where you will find two drag lifts and a 7-km cross-country skiing trail.
And Lindau is so conveniently located that the Vorarlberg and Allgäu skiing areas are less than an hour’s drive away. Or you can relax and take the ski train or bus to skiing areas in the Arlberg, Montafon, the Kloster Valley or the Brandner Valley. Excellent snow conditions, thousands of kilometres of pistes and state-of-the-art lifts await skiers and snowboarders alike. And the whole family will love to race down the nearby tobogganing runs! Those who prefer to stay on their own two feet can enjoy the peace and quiet of a snowshoeing tour.
Or maybe you like the ice? Then take a trip to Lindau’s ice rink in Eichwald, or – fingers crossed – the Kleiner See might even freeze over. Then it becomes a honeypot for ice skaters, ice hockey players and people who just want to walk across the ice from the bridge to the railway embankment.
Whatever your favourite winter sports activity, you’re sure to have fun!
