Pleasant climate all year round

In general, Lake Constance enjoys a pleasantly mild climate with an almost Mediterranean character. It is not for nothing that the region has established itself early on as a popular destination for recreation holidays.

Summers are warm, but thanks to the fresh sea breezes they are usually not too hot. Winters are comparatively mild – large masses of snow and very frosty days are rare. In autumn and spring, wafts of mist and fog often create a very special, mystical atmosphere – but it can also be stormy.

Lindau - weather in summer

Those who travel to Lindau in Lake Constance from June to August can expect an average of seven hours of sunshine per day. In addition, there is usually a mild breeze, which makes the temperatures, which sometimes climb above 30 degrees in summer, seem pleasant. The water temperature rises to over 20 degrees in July and August.

The number of rainy days is on average seven days higher than in the rest of the Republic – this is due to the proximity of the Alps. It is therefore also worth packing a light jacket and/or a rain cape in summer. The advantage of the mountain winds: “bad” weather can quickly turn into “good” weather again thanks to the air movements.

Lindau - weather in winter

Since Lake Constance acts as a large heat reservoir, winters here are also relatively mild. Extremely low temperatures are rare, only the wind can make it feel crisp and cold.

Once again, visitors benefit from the proximity to the mountains: the range of winter sports on offer in the region is very extensive. Cross-country skiing, sledging, skiing, snowboarding and ice-skating – everything is possible, and Lindau is the perfect starting point for many activities.

Föhn in spring and autumn

There are days at Lake Constance when the Alps seem close enough to touch: the breathtaking views are thanks to the foehn weather. Such weather conditions arise when a low-pressure system forms at the front of the Alps. The south-westerly current that develops in the process pushes the clouds towards the Southern Alps, where they accumulate and finally rain down. Then the clouds on the northern side of the Alps sink and dissipate – a so-called foehn window forms: the sun comes out and temperatures rise. As a result of the warming, the air becomes very dry and therefore contains very little water vapour, which is why visibility is very clear and the mountains seem very close.

What photographers love to do does not arouse so much enthusiasm among weather-sensitive people: the foehn wind causes them health problems such as headaches and circulatory problems. But strange as it sounds: Exercise in the fresh air can do you good here – and is also rewarded with a wonderful view.
