Nestled between the terminal moraine, Lake Constance, and the northern slope of the Alps, the Haug family’s fruit and wine paradise is located directly on the Bavarian side of Lake Constance. The winery is situated in the district of Schönau, on an old farm with a 400-year-old farmhouse and its associated farm buildings.
Today, the former cowshed houses the wine cellar and tasting room. In the adjoining building, a newly constructed gray shingled house, you will find the schnapps distillery and the wine shop. Half of the 6.5-hectare vineyard is located directly on the shores of Lake Constance, while the other half is near the farmstead on the southern slope of the Ringoldsberg. From a distance, it is already apparent that charismatic wines grow in both locations.
The lush vegetation, the mild Lake Constance climate, and the unique soil ensure vigorous growth, lending the fine wines a unique freshness and fruitiness. In addition to classics like Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), new grape varieties such as Solaris and Johanniter, as well as older French varieties like Maréchal Foch, are cultivated.
It was in 1975 that Claudius Haug’s father, along with his uncle, demonstrated great courage as career changers and revived the winemaking tradition in Lindau. In 2002, Claudius Haug, together with his wife whom he met during his agricultural studies, took over the management of the estate. Prior to this, they both deepened their oenological knowledge in California, Michigan, and New Zealand. Since 2010, the entire estate has been managed according to the Bioland organic farming guidelines.
You can sample the wines at a wine tasting. The focus of each tasting is on five to six carefully selected wines – from the current vintage to rarities from the treasure chamber. In addition to tips for perfect wine enjoyment and interesting information about the featured wines, you will learn many fascinating facts about viticulture, the Haug winery itself, and the Bavarian Lake Constance wine region.
Besides wine, apples play a significant role on the estate. As early as the 1970s, Haug Sr. switched to intensive apple cultivation. At that time, the apples were marketed through a cooperative. However, when the farm converted to organic methods in 2000, the cooperative was unwilling to market the organic apples. Consequently, Claudius Haug and his brothers had to manage the sales themselves. During this period, a joint label, ÖKOBO, and a marketing structure involving 30 organic fruit farms were established. Today, 80% of the apples, pears, and plums produced are sold via ÖKOBO to organic supermarkets and health food stores.
Currently, the Haugs cultivate 10 hectares of orchards. 95% of this area is planted with apple trees, and the remainder with plums and pears. The typical classic apple varieties include Jonagold, Elstar, Gala, and Braeburn. However, 40 percent of the cultivated area already consists of fungus-resistant varieties such as Topaz, Santana, or Collina. These are particularly well-suited for organic farming and also offer a delightful addition to the palate.
