When the sun shines on its colourful roof and the yellow upper floor glows brightly, visible from afar, it almost looks like a second lighthouse – the Mang Tower on the harbour promenade. And indeed, the square stone building was constructed in the 12th century as part of the medieval city fortifications.
Mang Tower used as a watchtower and signal tower
‘For the protection and defence of the seaport – a powerful symbol of the former free imperial city of Lindau,’ reads the inscription on the wall of the building. Imposing at 35 metres high and equipped with embrasures, the tower was once surrounded by water – a perfect observation post at the end of the city wall, which also included the two neighbouring towers of the fishermen’s quarter, the Peters Tower and the Thieves’ Tower. In order to send signals to ships on Lake Constance, fire baskets were hung on a pole outside the tower.
It was not until Lindau’s new lighthouse was completed in 1856 that the Mang Tower lost its function as a watchtower and signal tower. It was raised by one storey and covered with the distinctive glazed tiles that make it a popular photo motif today. In 1914, the former tower keeper’s apartment on the upper floor was converted into a viewing room. Many pictures also show a long, blonde braid hanging down from one of the embrasures – a reference to Rapunzel and the fairy tale hours that often take place in the historic building. Anyone who wants to listen to the stories or simply enjoy the wonderful view must, of course, first climb the 89 steps to the tower room.
On the top floor
…the windows of the viewing room offer a magnificent view of the built-up city and the rich landscape surrounding it, while the colourful ceiling provides a glimpse into Lindau’s rich history – as it was imagined in 1914. This year, Lindau artist Robert Schielin decorated the ceiling with the names and coats of arms of numerous cities with which Lindau once had close ties. He adorned the frieze with coats of arms, lettering and medallions. They tell the story of Lindau from its beginnings to 1914, from the convent and the imperial city of Lindau, from the Lindau Reichstag of 1496, from the Reformation and the Thirty Years’ War, from its affiliation with Bavaria (since 1806) and the Second German Empire (since 1871), as well as the kings and emperors who were important to Lindau.
Where does the name Mang Tower come from?
The name of the medieval Mang Tower tower suggests a former building in its neighbourhood: the Tuch- und Mangenhaus. This was the name given to the warehouses of the clothmakers’ guild in the Middle Ages. The name Mangenhaus therefore derives from Mange or Mangel – the smoothing machine used by dyers.
