Anyone who thinks they are in the heart of Upper Swabia is likely to find themselves in Ravensburg. This is true both geographically and economically – and was no different in earlier times. The historic gates and city towers of Ravensburg, which have been preserved, testify to the city’s importance as a trading centre. However, the fact that the city’s name is now known throughout the world has more modern – and above all ‘playful’ – reasons.
Ravensburg is adorned with 17 towers and gates, but only two are accessible. The ‘Blaserturm’ in the heart of the old town offers a fantastic view of the Allgäu, nearby Lake Constance and the snow-capped Alps. However, it is another tower that has become the city’s landmark: the rather uncharmingly named ‘Mehlsack’ (flour sack) is so called simply because it is whitewashed and has a round shape. Standing at 51 metres at the highest point of the old town, it is easily recognisable from afar.
Lively and charming, peaceful and historic
The old town of Ravensburg is definitely worth exploring during your visit. Whether it’s to discover all the charming little shops during a leisurely shopping trip or to learn about the history of the town and the region on one of the popular guided tours. A detour to Veitsburg Castle is also worthwhile: built high above the city, the medieval castle complex not only offers much more peace and quiet than the lively hustle and bustle of the old town – thanks to the view, you also get a completely different perspective of the city.
A whole world of games just outside the city
Ravensburg is not only known to younger visitors, especially when it comes to games. Ravensburger is not only world-famous for its board games and puzzles, but also operates one of Germany’s most visited amusement parks (in nearby Meckenbeuren). This park has also been awarded several times as the ‘most family-friendly theme park’ in the country. The Ravensburger Museum is an attractive addition, not only for the little ones. Reading, listening, playing, guessing: here, a visit becomes an interactive journey of discovery!
During a stay in Lindau, Ravensburg is the perfect destination for a day trip with the whole family. It takes just over half an hour to get there by car. Even better: it takes hardly any longer by public transport, which is free for overnight guests thanks to the ECHT BODENSEE CARD guest card.
