About five kilometres west of Lindau lies Wasserburg – a tranquil little town with around 5,000 inhabitants, whose most striking feature is its peninsula jutting out into Lake Constance with its ancient buildings: a Renaissance castle that once belonged to the Count of Montfort, the Catholic Church of St. George with its Baroque high altar, and the Malhaus, a former court building of the Fugger family.
Plenty of art and culture in Wasserburg
The walls of the castle complex in Wasserburg, which are up to three metres high, transport visitors back to a time when noble families resided at this prominent location. The estate has been privately owned since 1812 and is a popular destination for excursions in every season. Northeast of the Wasserburg half-island is the Mittelseemoos nature reserve, covering approximately seven hectares – one of the most species-rich fens in the Lindau district. The village is also located on the Birkenried nature trail, which provides interesting information about the fauna and flora at a total of nine stations. With a little patience, you can also spot many species of dragonflies and birds there.
Gems of Lake Constance history
One of Wasserburg’s smallest yet most significant cultural treasures is the Antonius Chapel with its unique Gothic Madonna. First mentioned in 1492, the tiny chapel stands on a hill surrounded by blossoming orchards and the shimmering waters of Lake Constance. A visit to the ‘Malhaus’ is also worthwhile: today it is the Wasserburg local history museum with various permanent and special exhibitions. The former courthouse is also the original site of the ‘Wasserburg witch trials’. You can almost feel the historic past here.
Discover the nature around Wasserburg
For a change of pace, we recommend taking long walks through the lush orchards with thousands of apple, pear and cherry trees and through the dense vineyards. Fancy an active holiday? How about the Aquamarin outdoor pool, which invites you to swim in heated pools with a distant view of the Alpine panorama? There is something for everyone to see and do in Wasserburg on Lake Constance.
