First of all, a few facts: with a surface area of 540 square kilometres Lake Constance is the third-largest lake in Europe and the second-largest in terms of water volume.

Facts of Lake Constance

It has 273 kilometres of shoreline, of which 173 are in Germany, 72 in Switzerland and 28 in Austria. At its widest point, the lake is 14 kilometres across and at its deepest point the lake bed is 254 metres below the surface. The Obersee and Untersee (the upper and lower sections of the lake) have 10 islands with a surface area in excess of 2,000 square metres.

Looking for some action? Then it’s time to get out on the water! Lake Constance is just waiting to be explored. Whether you take a trip on a ferry or sightseeing boat, rent your own boat or simply jump on an air mattress. But remember, on stormy days the lake really lives up to its nickname, the “Swabian Sea”. It can become quite rough, with waves up to 3.5 metres high!
