The colorful mixture of folk festival, amusement park and market is a good opportunity to visit Lindau outside the main season: about 140 merchants, 60 showmen and thousands of visitors spread a busy and lively atmosphere on the island from November 08 to 12, 2024.
A festival with tradition
While in many towns and villages in Germany the funfair takes place during spring and summer, the colourful hustle and bustle in Lindau only begins in November. The reason for this is the long tradition of the funfair: in the middle of the 17th century there were originally two fairs – one in spring and one in autumn. At that time, the arriving merchants brought many goods to the island that were otherwise not available or difficult to obtain. So locals and guests stocked up on daily necessities at the All Saints’ Market.
And even today the fair is still a good opportunity to stroll and shop, enjoy delicious food and celebrate in a relaxed atmosphere.
Colourful activity on the island
From the pedestrian zone to the churches on the market square, the stalls of the flying merchants line up side by side. Practical household goods, colourful toys, pretty decorative items or unusual handicrafts – everyone will find something to their liking here. On the seaport promenade, fans of amusement rides get their money’s worth. A romantic ferris wheel ride with a view of the lion and lighthouse, a wild ride in a bumper car or a nostalgic game on the chain carousel – what would you like to have? If you prefer something a little quieter, you might enjoy traditional amusements such as balloon throwing, ball pinning or thread pulling.
Whatever you feel like doing: The colourful mixture of folk festival, amusement park and grocery market will certainly inspire you – it is not for nothing that the Lindau funfair has been a magnet for visitors from near and far for centuries.
