Train and bus, ferry and bicycle: In order to be mobile nowadays, you no longer need to have your own car. “Think ahead and combine wisely” is the formula that can contribute to sustainable travel and living. Those who choose the right means of transport depending on the situation and destination make a valuable contribution to protecting our environment.

Get around by bus - Lindau's city buses

The buses of the Lindau public utility company take you quickly and easily through the entire city area. All bus stops are served regularly; wheelchairs and prams can be easily transported due to the low entry of the buses. However, bicycles are not permitted.

Whether you are travelling alone or with the whole family: You can buy the appropriate ticket directly on the bus, at the ticket machines at the main bus stop (ZUP) or at the Tourist Information Office.

Travel comfortably by train from A to B

The Lindau train station is located directly on the island and thus in the heart of the city. It is only a few metres from the train door to the harbour – the idyllic train ride along the shore is followed by a spectacular view of the lake and the Austrian and Swiss mountains.

Connections to the surrounding area are very good, same as the connections to major cities. For example, the regional train takes you directly to Radolfzell – with stops in Friedrichshafen, Salem, Uhldingen and Überlingen, among others. Bregenz is only a few minutes away – and especially in the summer season the train is definitely the faster and nerve-saving alternative for a visit to Austria’s neighbours.

Lindau’s location on the border of two federal states and two states gives you real financial advantages: From here, both the Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg tickets are valid, allowing you to travel at low cost.

Ship ahoy

A boat trip is probably the best way to get from one place to another while enjoying wonderful views. It also saves you unnecessary kilometres on the water and the traffic jams on the road. Some ships are out and about all year round – for example the catamaran, which takes pedestrians and cyclists from Friedrichshafen to Konstanz in 45 minutes. You can also get to Constance from Meersburg all year round.

The car ferry also runs daily from Friedrichshafen to Romanshorn in Switzerland. From April to mid-October, numerous other course and excursion ships populate the lake: 30 passenger ships with a total of 18,000 seats take you to the most beautiful destinations along the lake shore. Direct connections of the White Fleet run from Lindau to Bregenz, Rorschach, Friedrichshafen and Meersburg, among others.

Round trips of varying duration are also offered. For these you can set sail with the Bodensee Schiffsbetriebe both at the Lindau harbour and near the Lindau casino. On the Austrian “Hohentwiel”, you will glide over the water in the more than 100-year-old paddle wheel steamer, and the art deco ship Oesterreich promises glamorous moments in a noble flair.

Rent Cargo bikes

Bikes support goals of Lindau’s climate-friendly mobility concept

After the City of Lindau successfully applied for the model project “Rent a cargo bike, relieve municipalities, set up a cargo bike rental system in municipalities” tendered by the Bavarian State Ministry of Housing, Construction and Transport, work has been carried out at full speed over the last few years to set up the cargo bike system for the City of Lindau. Now the cargo bike rental system is available for locals and guests. The system can be rented via the Lastenrad-Bayern app from the company TeilRad GmbH.

Eight stations, each with two cargo bikes, are available in Lindau:

  • Inselhalle
  • Stadttheater
  • Alfred-Nobel-Platz
  • Lindaupark
  • Münchhof
  • Mini Maxi
  • Aeschacher Markt
  • Kopernikusplatz

The cargo bikes are available around the clock and can be individually adapted due to the adjustable handlebars and saddle. The cargo bike, which weighs about 20 kilograms, can be loaded with up to 70 kilograms, excluding the weight of the rider. Thanks to its powerful electric motor, it rides effortlessly as soon as the pedals are pressed.
