Säntis and the Schwägalp are well worth a visit at any time of year. The cableway runs all year round and takes just ten minutes to whisk you up to a height of 2,502 metres. Säntis is the highest mountain in eastern Switzerland and on clear days it offers breathtaking views over Lake Constance and six different countries. Have you worked out what the six countries are that can be seen from the summit of the Säntis on a clear day? We give you the answer: Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Liechtenstein and, of course, Switzerland.
Summer on the Säntis
In summer you can escape the city heat and do some walking or Nordic walking on the extensive network of hiking trails on and around the mountain and the Schwägalp. To see nature at its best, take one of the early trips up the mountain on Sundays (from 5.00 am in July and 6.00 am in August) and enjoy a spectacular sunrise and a sumptuous “Zmorge” breakfast buffet on the summit.
Mountain dairy at Säntis
And if you’ve ever wondered exactly how cheese is made, you should visit the Alpschaukäserei (mountain dairy) near the cableway base station, which is open from May to November and sells fresh dairy products.
Säntis in Winter
Winter is also a wonderful time to visit Säntis. The snow transforms the mountain and the Schwägalp into a winter wonderland that is perfect for snowshoeing, winter walking and tobogganing. There are no marked or groomed downhill runs on the mountain, so the Säntis is only suitable for very experienced skiers.
